This page is to book your appointment to give notice of your intention to form a civil partnership this is NOT the booking for your ceremony. If you are intending to get married please click here to book your appoinment to give notice.

Unless you are getting married in an Anglican church and not subject to immigration control, you must give notice at a register office

Please note this applies only to those living in England and Wales. Carefully read the following 6 options that fit your circumstances.

Option 1 - If both you and your partner are British / Irish nationals then you must both give at least 28 clear days' notice at the register office for the local authority where you live (this will mean if you live in different districts then you will need to go separately to the appropriate register offices).

Option 2 - If both you and your partner re enrolled enrolled on the European Settlement scheme with settled / pre settled status or have an application pending made before 30th June 2021; then you must both give at least 28 clear days' notice at the register office for the local authority where you live (this will mean if you live in different districts then you will need to go separately to the appropriate register offices).

Option 3 - If you are British / Irish and your partner is enrolled on the European Settlement scheme with settled / pre settled status or have an application pending made before 30th June 2021; then you must both give at least 28 clear days' notice at the register office for the local authority where you live (this will mean if you live in different districts then you will need to go separately to the appropriate register offices).

Option 4 - If both you and / or your partner have indefinite leave to remain; then you must give at least 28 clear days' notice together at the register office for the local authority where one or both of you live (this will mean if you live in different districts then you will need to go together to one of those register offices).

Option 5 - If both you and / or your partner have acquired a marriage visa to marry in this country; then you must give at least 28 clear days' notice together at the register office for the local authority where one or both of you live (this will mean if you live in different districts then you will need to go together to one of those register offices).

Option 6 - If you and your partner are subject to immigration control, that is where at least one of you are:

  • not British or Irish
  • without indefinate leave to remain/indefinite leave to enter
  • have not enrolled on the European Settelled Scheme with settelled/pre settled status or have an application pending made before 30th June 2021
  • have not acquired a visa to marry/form a civil partnership in the UK
  • other exemptions from immigration control

you must give notice together at the register office for the local authority where one or both of you live (this will mean if you live in different districts then you will need to go together to one of those register offices). You both will be referred to Home Office Immigration under the 'referral and investigation' scheme. This may mean that you may have your notice period extended from 28 to 70 days if the Home Office has reasonable grounds to investigate their circumstances and will increase the fee per person from £35.00 to £47.00.

A notice is a legal statement that must be given individually by each of you before you can hold your ceremony.

If you arrive for a notice appointment and do not have the required documentation, or do not meet the residency or other requirements, then the notice appointment will not be able to go ahead.  A further appointment will need to be made and the fees will need to be paid again.

Demand for appointments can be high so we advise you book your notice appointment up to 12 months ahead.  Your ceremony cannot be confirmed until notice has been given and an authority issued after the notices have been displayed publicly for 28 or 70 clear days (dependant on immigration status).

Notices are venue specific and only valid for 12 months so please ensure you do not make an appointment more than 12 months ahead of your ceremony date

Remember you both need to attend a notice appointment so book a double appointment if you both live in Croydon or are attending us as a Designated Office for non EEA nationals.
